The European Union elects on union level a parliament. The European Parliament has 732 members, elected for a five year term by proportional representation in one or more constituencies in each member country.
The European Union has a multi-party system, with numerous parties. Often no one party has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalitions.
