One major goal of education is to help students learn what they need to know in their life. However because of the varying paths lives take, (as well as the unpredictability of the out side world) it is impossible to teach everything.

Therefore it may be more helpful to think about how to teach students to aquire more knowledge. For example if a student is assigned a research paper on the prussian war, few retain that knowledge later in life. Instead they retain the knowledge of how they found analyzed and remembered the relevent facts to complete the assignment. This ability to learn becomes the primary product of their education.

This is also called meta-cognition, and is commonly taught as "study skill"
