The Liberal Democrats are a socially liberal political party in the United Kingdom. They are the third-largest party in the UK Parliament, behind Labour and the Conservatives, with 63 Members of Parliament. The current leader is Menzies Campbell.

The party promotes social and political liberalism, but is not economically liberal, supporting the welfare state, high levels of government spending, and increased taxes on high earners. This has led some to claim that the party (traditionally thought of as centrist) is now more left-wing than the Labour Party.

The Liberal Democrats were formed in 1988 after a merger between the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Liberal Party.
