The issue of continued expansion of heavy industry in Iceland is likely to be a major issue during the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Iceland in the spring of 2007. The favoured type of heavy industry has been as seems set to be aluminium smelters, using electrolysis to purify the bauxite.

Large hydroelectric and geothermal facilities[]

In Iceland, the electricty will come from large hydroelectric power projects or large geothermal energy projects. These methods of producing electricty have traditionally been viewed as renewable and environmentally beneficial when compared to the alternatives of coal, oil, gas or nuclear energy. The viability of these forms of large scale power "production" have become disputed, especially during the recent several decades, and especially when taking place in areas perceived to be vulnerable from the point of conservation and valuable from the point of view of biological diversity, "untouched" wilderness and tourism.
